Toms Shoes is a relatively new footwear company having only been formed in 2006 in the Unites States of America. The founder was a young Entrepreneur named Blake Mycoskie who himself was from Arlington in Texas.
Mycoskie got the idea for Toms Shoes having visited his sister in Argentina in 2006. Whilst there he came across the traditional Argentinian alpargata design of shoes which are more widely known as Espadrilles. Mycoskie knew they would be popular back in Northern America but he wanted to combine this with an ethical message. The message and reasoning was simple but effective, for every paid of Toms Shoes sold he would donate a pair of shoes to a child in the developing world who needed them.
By 2009 the brand has been a runaway success and was retailed in several countries around the work including England, Australia, Germany and France, and by the end of 2009 they had donated over 600,000 pair of shoes to the those in need. The official name for the charity program they run is the Toms One-For-One foundation.
Aside from giving away shoes the brand is also very strong minded on how and where is shoes are manufactured and the labor conditions for workers. No children are allowed to be employed and working pay and hours have to be fair and strictly adhered to, to protect the rights of the employees.
The company now produces a huge range of footwear including separate collections for men, women and children.
